Natural dye with cassava shavings
Social technology from Brazilian indigenous people will be exhibited at the fashion fair Inspiramais
The 29th edition of INSPIRAMAIS, a show that annually launches more than two thousand innovative and sustainable materials for the footwear, clothing, furniture and jewelry industries, has open registrations for buyers and professionals. One of the highlights of the edition, which takes place on January 23 and 24, 2024, at the FIERGS Event Center, in Porto Alegre/RS, is the presentation of indigenous researcher Sioduhi Piratapuya, who on the first day of the event will present the ManioColor technology, which develops natural dye from cassava shavings.
Sioduhi, indigenous to the Piratapuya people of the Alto Rio Negro (Upper Rio Negro) territory, has been developing the technology for two years, and points out that the project is part of raising awareness about the sustainable use of the potential of the Amazon.
“We want to show these technologies that already exist in existing chains not only in indigenous territories, but also in quilombo (village people) and riverside peoples of the Amazon rainforest,” he says.
According to him, the dye, which is already applied to fabric in a five-color palette, will soon also be applied to tucum fibers, a sustainable material widely used by populations in the Upper Rio Negro.
“At INSPIRAMAIS, we will present the research, from its beginning until now, showing the entire process involved until reaching the application,” adds Sioduhi.
Dyes
The researcher points out that the natural dye option is 100% biodegradable and solves a problem still common in the fashion industry, which is synthetic dye. “The use of synthetic dye is harmful to the forest, especially when we talk about contamination of our waters,” he points out.
In addition to Sioduhi, lectures are confirmed on the research of Intergenerational inspirations, which is the basis of the materials launched at INSPIRAMAIS (with Walter Rodrigues); on innovation and sustainability (with Suelen Joner, Arezzo&Co, and Flavio Enninger, Quattro Projetos Culturais); on Insight and Excellence (with Ricardo Benucci, from Benucci Products); on fashion technology (Jordana Guimarães, Fashinnovation: Bridging the Gap Between the Fashions and Technology); about Grupo Soma; and more. Registration is free at the link.
