Donata Wenders wears a VCR tape dress by Cruba to the Oscar 2024
The renowned photographer and wife of filmmaker Wim Wenders wears the perfect slow fashion dress, made of tapes such as “Paris, Texas” (one of my favorite movies). This is the intersection of fashion, arts, and environment that we want to see!
Berlin – CRUBA‘s designer Mira von der Osten has created a dress for Donata Wenders, the renowned photographer and wife of filmmaker Wim Wenders, for the OSCAR Awards. Hand-knitted from video tapes, it will be presented for the first time on the red carpet at the 96th Academy Awards.
“PERFECT DAYS“, directed by Wim Wenders and shot in Tokyo, is nominated for Best International Feature Film. Donata Wenders created the movie’s dream sequences.
She said at the fitting:
“A dress knitted from three VHS film tapes, that’s brilliant! The fact that it is now the VCR tapes of “PARIS, TEXAS“, “HIMMEL ÜBER BERLIN” and “TOKYO-GA” which are my favorite films, tops the whole thing of course, and is completely sustainable! Going to the Oscars in a magnetic ribbon dress with the Oscar nominee’s films… This is where past, future and present come together! That needs to be shown on THE red carpet!”.
Music cassettes play an important role in the nominated film “PERFECT DAYS”. VCR tapes are the same material, only wider than the pure music tape.
Wim Wenders was thrilled at first sight:
“The dress is awesome! At last something beautiful is being made from these old VCR tapes! I was always ashamed of the lousy audiovisual quality of video tapes.”
Mira von der Osten adds: “The material plays so wonderfully with the light. It was a pleasure to wrap Donata Wenders in film and promote sustainability on the red carpet.”

The VCR kitted clothes is an old technique in sustainable fashion. I’ve seen many upcycled bags this way in popular arts and crafts fairs in Brazil. The novelty here is the meaning of the tapes (who does now like Win Wenders movies?) and the occasion (the Oscar, a design showcase).
