I’m Belinda from Macnas and I’m fascinated by bags. How everyone uses them, to bring valuable and useful things along, but also as a means of expression. My design and making drive is focused on this. The bag as an item in terms of sustainability is a challenge in the current fashion industry, I will help you with that. Through unique personal designs that makes you want to cherish your bag for a long time. By researching materials to make bags that don’t have to end up in the landfill, but can be buried in a garden.

Sustainability
My sustainable work consists of two parts:
I want to make bags that never have to end up in a landfill. That you can bury them in your garden and that new material can grow from them. With this great fascination for making products with as small a footprint as possible, I started experimenting with biodegradable materials. This mission has made me a material explorer. Ongoing experiments include material from cactus, mango leather, mycelium, and bioplastics with, for example, turmeric and kombucha. I have also been working with Gabriël van Meurs as a graduation project since January, to design and make compostable haberdashery (the hardware of the bag), so now we have the first compostable prototypes of bags ready for the next step.
In addition, I want to make bags that can touch people like music can touch me! That you can carry the bag with you as art. Bag as the ultimate means of expression. When a bag is so personal it is easier to cherish it for a long time, so you don’t feel the urge to replace it every season. By involving the customer in the design process the connection with the bag will be stronger.
Target
My customers are people that want to invest in a personal bag. People that are interested in handmade items with a modern design. People that have ideas about their ideal bag and can’t seem to find it in stores. People that are interested in sustainability, innovators that want to try new alternatives.
