Xander: eco-friendly and zero waste bags from India
Borned sustainable, the brand offers a wide portfolio of accessories for different purposes
Eco-friendly materials
The brand started in the year 2019 with the motive of taking sustainable fashion to a global level. Lack of truly sustainable products marked the beginning of Xander.
Xander started with the vision of handcrafting bags using 100% bio-degradable, natural, and eco-friendly material. We use azo-free dyed washed jute, cotton & canvas fabric, and other indigenous materials (weaved bamboo locally called “chatai”, wheat grass ropes etc.) which are handcrafted by our local skilled artisans. We also use factory cut-out leather, which would otherwise go to waste, to add aesthetics to our bags.
“Jute by nature is eco-friendly and 100% bio-degradable. Our USP is that we use washed jute canvas fabric which we procure from our Kolkata based manufacturers. Some of our suppliers are Gloster Ltd. and Ludlow Jute and Specialities Ltd.
Since we are a start-up, we believe in minimizing our costs which are related to certifications and channelizing it towards our artisans to provide them with a proper wage for their craftsmanship. Our suppliers can provide us with GOTS certification but they charge an additional fee for it. If you want the certification, we can get it, but the price of the product will inflate due to this.
Moreover, jute is grown mostly in India and Bangladesh with India being the largest producer of jute in the world. From yarn to finished goods, the majority of the production process happens in West Bengal, India.”
Zero Waste
We are a truly sustainable brand as we not only use 100% eco-friendly material, but we also create a collection out of factory cut-out fabrics. We advocate for Zero Waste principles focused on waste prevention that encourages the redesign of resource life cycles so that all products are reused. The goal is for no trash to be sent to landfills, incinerators, or the ocean. In order to ensure this, we collect all our factory cut out fabrics and skilfully use it in a progressive way to make our zero-waste collection.
“All our factory cut-out fabrics are collected at our workshop. In order to make optimum utilization of our resources, we make a zero-waste collection out of the waste fabric. Our zero-waste collection is limited to 2-3 units per design as it is made from cut-out materials. You can check our zero waste collection making process video at Our Story. Also, you can find our Zero-Waste Collection.
Production process
We also collaborate with local artisans to innovatively re-design their indigenous art giving them global exposure.
“We employ artisans living in the outskirts of Kolkata, namely Baruipur and Jaynagar, who are into craftsmanship for generations. Due to the mass production of goods and cheaper alternatives available in the market, their community is affected the most. We as a start-up are helping them showcase their detailed work and craftsmanship skills by taking their work to a global platform and helping these local communities survive.”
